SKIcation

We DuPonts were treated to a wonderful family ski vacation this past week. With mid-winter blues setting in, it was perfect timing for us to retreat to the mountains for some slope time.

The snowflakes started to fall the afternoon we arrived which was an added treat to ski some fresh powder the first day. I am now totally convinced that the family vacation myths out there are just that - bunk! The kids were great, loving every activity from skiing to hot tubbing to gondola rides and even night skiing. By the end of our four day stay they were begging for another night.

The week prior I snuck out to the Kootenays with the kids for a little home time, which meant of winter vacation lasted almost two weeks. We spent a good chunk of our time there playing outdoors in the snow as well. Making the most of the month that can sometimes seem to longest of the year.

Adam Field in Canada!?!

On Saturday afternoon, our good friend Adam Field dropped out of the skies and landed at the Calgary International Airport.

Adam is here for the next week to present a workshop to the ceramics students at ACAD. The workshop is open to the public as well, for anyone interested in learning more about Adam's fine handcrafted techniques.

We're stoked that he is here staying with us, as we welcome the chance to catch up and hang out with such a fantastic friend for the week.

Details of the workshop and Lecture talk are included in the poster.

And a very happy birthday wish to Adam who spent the majority of his birthday - day in transit travelling from Durango, CO to Calgary.

Happy Birthday Adam!

Good Old Real Conversations

I recently reconnected with an old friend from my University days here in Calgary. It was an unexpected reunion of sorts, as we both accepted an invite to the same party. Nonetheless it wasn't a total surprise to see one another at this particular event  - and in some ways more fortunate that we hadn't planned it ourselves (the reunion, that is - not the party - it was a very fun party!)

After catching up on the 'where you beens and the what you been up tos'....we reminisced about our University classes and professors which aptly shifted the conversation towards a more philosophical nature. I've found myself thinking about our conversation at the party this week and the value of real conversation.  The kind of conversations that you remember years later - rather than small talk and superficial salutations that you don't.

With all the tweets and sound bytes and blog posts for that matter, I am feeling the need to not forget about how important it is to still connect face to face. Instead of a status post expressing your adoration for someone this Valentine's day, make sure you tell them in person. Learn something new about that special person that you might not know besides what you can look up in their timeline.

CERAMICArt

On the weekend I headed up to the college to help Robin and some of the students put up the undergraduate ceramics program exhibition: CERAMICArt in the main mall at ACAD.

It is a ton of work putting a show together with all the plinths, lighting, wall decals, labelling etc. etc. But always good times when it involves pizza, and surely another way to round up some more help. Thanks to all those that pitched in on Sunday to pull it together.

The show highlights the diversity of work by students in the ceramics program and is up in the main mall at the art college all this week and next, with a closing exhibition on Thursday, February 16th from 5 - 7 p.m.
